The Chimanga Campaign

The goal of this program is simple: to boost maize production by providing farmers with access to quality seeds, input loans, and farm management support, ensuring increased yields and enhanced food security in Malawi.” This is an introductory statement to one of ZENGA’s projects: The Chimanga Campaign.

The Chimanga Campaign: Strengthening Food Security Through Maize Production

At ZENGA, we recognize that Nsima, a dish made from maize, is the staple food for nearly all regions of Malawi and beyond. It is a central part of daily meals, providing sustenance to millions. However, despite its importance, many smallholder farmers struggle to produce enough maize due to limited access to quality inputs, financing, and proper farm management support.

With this realization, we launched the Chimanga Campaign—a strategic initiative aimed at boosting maize production as a direct approach to tackling hunger. By equipping farmers with the necessary resources, knowledge, and financial support, we ensure they can maximize their yields and contribute to a more food-secure Malawi.

Through the Chimanga Campaign, we provide:
High-quality maize seeds to ensure improved resistance, better yields, and climate adaptability.
Input loans to help farmers access essential fertilizers and other critical inputs without financial strain.
Farm management support, equipping farmers with the skills and strategies needed for soil fertility management, pest control, and sustainable farming practices.

By strengthening maize production, we are not only supporting farmers but also ensuring that millions of Malawians have access to their staple food, making this project a crucial step toward ending hunger and fostering agricultural resilience.

The Crop Diversification Initiative

We implemented this project to promote sustainable agriculture by encouraging farmers to diversify their crops, reducing dependency on maize and increasing resilience against climate change, while enhancing income opportunities and nutritional outcomes.

The Crop Diversification Initiative: Building Resilient and Sustainable Agriculture

At ZENGA, we understand that while maize is a staple in Malawi, relying solely on a single crop poses significant risks to food security, farmer income, and climate resilience. Climate change, soil degradation, and fluctuating market prices make it essential for farmers to diversify their agricultural production.

With this in mind, we implemented the Crop Diversification Initiative, a strategic program designed to reduce farmers’ dependency on maize, increase agricultural resilience, and enhance both income opportunities and nutritional outcomes.

Through this initiative, we provide:
Support for growing alternative crops such as legumes, vegetables, and drought-resistant cereals, ensuring year-round food availability.
Climate-smart agricultural techniques, helping farmers adapt to erratic weather patterns and improve soil health.
Market linkages and training, equip farmers with the knowledge to cultivate high-value crops that increase profitability.
Improved nutrition, ensuring communities have access to a variety of foods, reducing malnutrition, and promoting better health.

By encouraging sustainable diversification, we are empowering farmers to build long-term agricultural resilience, increase household incomes, and contribute to a more food-secure Malawi.

Lifeline Livestock Program

Goal: to empower farmers through improved livestock management practices, better access to veterinary care, and sustainable feeding solutions, ensuring increased productivity, household nutrition, and economic stability.

Lifeline Livestock Program: Sustaining Farmers, Strengthening Livelihoods

At ZENGA, we recognize that livestock farming is more than just a source of income—it is a lifeline for many households in Malawi. With livestock contributing significantly to rural livelihoods, food security, and economic empowerment, we launched the Lifeline Livestock Program to support farmers in maximizing their potential in animal husbandry.

Our goal is simple yet impactful: to empower farmers through improved livestock management practices, better access to veterinary care, and sustainable feeding solutions. By providing farmers with the necessary knowledge, tools, and resources, we ensure that their livestock remains healthy, productive, and resilient to environmental and economic challenges.

Through this program, we are:
Offering training in modern livestock management to improve breeding, feeding, and disease prevention.
Facilitating access to veterinary services to reduce mortality rates and enhance livestock health.
Promoting sustainable feeding solutions that utilize locally available resources to reduce costs and increase yields.
Strengthening market linkages to help farmers gain better prices for their livestock and animal products.

By investing in livestock farming, we are not only securing food sources like milk, eggs, and meat but also creating economic stability for families and entire communities. The Lifeline Livestock Program is a crucial step toward breaking the cycle of poverty, strengthening rural economies, and enhancing food security across Malawi.

At ZENGA, we believe that livestock farming is a powerful tool for resilience and prosperity. By equipping farmers with the right support, we are ensuring a more sustainable and food-secure future for all.
